Take part in the Impact Assessment of the Deep Geological Repository for Nuclear Fuel
A number of important community engagement events and consultations will be taking place from April 14 – April 22, 2026.
The Nuclear Waste Management Organization (the NWMO) is proposing a new underground deep geological repository system designed to safely contain and isolate used nuclear fuel. Wabigoon Lake Ojibway Nation (WLON) and the Township of Ignace have been selected as the host communities for the proposed project, which is located 21 kilometres southeast of the WLON and 43 kilometres northwest of the Town of Ignace, Ontario along Highway 17.
As proposed, the Deep Geological Repository (DGR) for Canada’s Used Nuclear Fuel Project would provide permanent storage for approximately 5.9 million bundles of used nuclear fuel. The project is expected to span approximately 160 years, encompassing site preparation, construction, operation and closure monitoring. The project assessment is being conducted in collaboration with the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission.
Come out for the NWMO Environmental Baseline Presentation on April 20, 2026
The NWMO will be attending the Local Services Board Meeting on April 20, 2026 at 6:00 p.m. to present information on their upcoming Human Health and Ecological Risk Assessment (HHERA) and Diet and Land Use baseline studies for the Deep Geological Repository at the Revell Site. Come out and learn about the studies they will be conducting as part of the regulatory and licensing processes.

Come out for an Open House with the Impact Assessment Agency of Canada and the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission on April 22, 2026
The Impact Assessment Agency of Canada and the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission are holding a series of information sessions regarding the federal regulatory process for Canada’s used nuclear fuel project. They will host an Open House on April 22 at the Dyment Recreation Hall from 3:00-7:00 p.m. with discussions and presentations on the Impact Assessment (IA) process.

IAAC Releases Draft Tailored Impact Statement Guidelines
On April 10, the Impact Assessment Agency of Canada issued the Draft Tailored Impact Statement Guidelines for the Deep Geological Repository (DGR) for Canada’s Used Nuclear Fuel Project. The purpose of an Impact Statement is to identify and assess the impacts of the project, how various people may be affected, and the measures proposed to mitigate these effects.
