An investment in community life and active living

Improvements to recreation spaces and the community garden are helping make Melgund Township more accessible, active and connected.

It's rewarding to see months of planning and hard work turn into something tangible. These improvements represent a lot of local effort, cooperation and support from the Ontario Trillium Foundation. We're looking forward to seeing residents enjoy the results and putting these new spaces to good use.

Making More Room for Everyone at the Dyment Recreation Hall and Park thanks to the Ontario Trillium Foundation Capital Grants Program.

A lot can happen in a week, especially when there’s a community project to get across the finish line before winter arrives! Around the Dyment Recreation Hall and Park, some of that progress has been hard to miss. The orange tarps, temporary closures around the wheelchair ramps and terrace steps, and all the activity on site have been part of a series of improvements that will make the complex more accessible and useful for everyone.

We’ve been installing several new concrete pads around the recreation facilities, creating level, stable surfaces that will make it easier for people to move between different areas of the complex. These improvements are particularly important for older residents and people with physical mobility challenges, who can face additional difficulties navigating uneven surfaces and outdoor spaces.

Winter makes these challenges even more noticeable. Snow, freezing rain and icy conditions can turn familiar walkways into difficult and sometimes hazardous routes. By improving the surfaces around the hall, we’re taking practical steps to make it easier for people to access recreation facilities and participate in community activities throughout the year.

We want the Dyment Recreation Hall to be a place where people can come together, stay active and enjoy everything our community has to offer. That means making improvements that encourage participation, support healthy living and help remove some of the everyday barriers that can prevent people from getting involved.

There’s also been some exciting progress on the community garden side of things. A new 13-by-13-foot concrete pad has been installed to accommodate a garden shed, which we’ll be putting up next week. The shed will provide much-needed storage for gardening tools, equipment and supplies, making it easier to look after the garden and prepare for future growing seasons. The garden has become one of our major community projects this year, and having the right infrastructure in place is an important next step.

These improvements contribute to something much bigger than the individual projects themselves. We’re continuing to build the facilities and shared spaces needed to support recreation, arts, culture and heritage programming across Melgund Township and the surrounding area. Whether it’s a community gathering, an arts workshop, a gardening activity or a seasonal event, having accessible and well-maintained spaces makes it possible to bring more people together.

We owe a great deal of thanks to the Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) and the Ontario Trillium Foundation, whose Capital Grants program has provided generous support for these infrastructure improvements. Their investment is helping us make meaningful changes to a facility that serves our community, and we’re grateful for their confidence in the work taking place here. We also thank local nonprofit organizations Melgund Recreation, Arts and Culture and the Art Borups Corners Society for taking on much of the work to coordinate and build out all these infrastructure improvements. We couldn’t do it without their effort and support.

There’s no shortage of work to do, and with winter approaching, we’re certainly keeping busy! But it’s encouraging to see these improvements taking shape and to know that they’ll make a lasting difference for the people who use the complex. The new concrete pads and upcoming garden shed are important additions, but there’s much more planned for the Dyment Recreation Hall.

We’re building a better space for community life, one improvement at a time.

Making community facilities accessible means paying attention to the routes people use every day. The new concrete surfaces around the wheelchair ramps provide a more stable approach and make it easier to navigate the entrances. It's an important improvement for residents who rely on mobility aids and those who simply need a little extra support getting around.

Every filled bed represents time, effort and people willing to pitch in. Thanks to everyone who helped make this expanded growing space a reality. The expansion gives us more space to grow together when spring returns. For now, we can take a moment to appreciate how far the garden has come.

A few more tools in the shed means more hands-on work can happen when it’s time to get into the garden. There’s plenty to do, and now we’re a little better equipped to do it. Thanks to the Ontario Trillium Foundation Capital Grants program for supporting our community garden and living lab programming.
