Melgund Recreation, Arts and Culture serves as a community recreation services provider supporting the Local Services Board of Melgund and the communities of Dyment and Borups Corners in Melgund Township, Northwestern Ontario. Through recreation programming, arts and culture initiatives, community events, placemaking projects, volunteer engagement, park and greenspace enhancement, heritage programming, and community development activities, the organization helps strengthen quality of life for residents while supporting vibrant, connected rural communities. Working in partnership with local organizations, volunteers, artists, and community leaders, Melgund Recreation, Arts and Culture contributes to the development of accessible recreation opportunities, cultural experiences, community celebrations, public spaces, and tourism initiatives that benefit residents and visitors throughout Melgund Township and Northwestern Ontario.

Call to Order and Approval of Minutes

The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. by Chairperson Pat Daignault.

Having no errors or omissions, it was moved by Norm and seconded by Sean to approve the minutes of the Monday, July 13, 2026, meeting.

Correspondence

The Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) informed the Board that its Capital Grant application had been approved in the amount of $36,750.00. The Board expressed its thanks to Jamie for all his work on its behalf.

The Northwestern Health Unit (NWHU) sent a report following the health inspector’s visit. All is in good order.

Business Arising from the Minutes

The transfer of ownership of the hall property has finally been completed. The hall is now registered to the Local Services Board of Melgund.

By-Law 10-2026, relating to the audit, was prepared for signing. The motion was passed by Norm and seconded by Pat at the special meeting held with Willie Winters.

There were no tenders received for the proposed projects.

The Board is still waiting for funding from NWMO.

New Business

Starlink has been mounted, and the cable still needs to be run through the wall.

It was moved by Norm and seconded by Sean that the LSB formally engage with and respond to the City of Dryden regarding its proposed RFP to study the socio-economic issues related to unincorporated communities.

Recreation Committee Update

The Recreation Committee reported the good news of receiving the OTF Capital Grant in the amount of $36,750.00. The funds should be transferred this week.

A special thank-you was extended to Leanne for making time to hold a painting workshop on Wednesday, August 12. The participants all had a great time.

The 2nd Annual Jamboree is planned for Saturday, September 12, 2026, from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. Posters are being finalized, and final plans are being made.

Treasurer’s Report

The Treasurer’s Report for July 2026 was presented.

It was moved by Pat and seconded by Sean to accept the Treasurer’s Report as presented.

Upcoming Events and Community Activities

Coffee time at the hall takes place every Monday and Wednesday from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. Everyone is welcome to stop in for a visit.

The Music Jamboree, Craft Sale, and Garage Sale will take place on Saturday, September 12, 2026. Bring your own items to sell. Participants can set up a table or sell from their trunk or truck box. A BBQ will also be available.

The next LSB meeting will be held on Monday, September 21, 2026, at 7:00 p.m. at the hall.

The next Community Breakfast will be held on Saturday, October 31, 2026. All-you-can-eat breakfast is $5.00.

The MRAC nonprofit also meets on Saturday mornings at 10:00 a.m. for workshops, planning, and training.

It was moved by Pat and seconded by Sean that the meeting be adjourned at 7:40 p.m.

Melgund Recreation, Arts and Culture is a community-based organization operating in Northwestern Ontario that works in direct coordination with the Local Services Board of Melgund to plan, deliver, and sustain recreation programming and public space activation across Dyment, Borups Corners, and the surrounding area. The organization supports the day-to-day function and long-term use of shared community facilities, including the Dyment Recreation Hall and its surrounding grounds, by organizing events, maintaining active programming schedules, and mobilizing volunteers to ensure these spaces remain accessible and in regular use. Its work includes the development of seasonal recreation programs, community events, arts and cultural initiatives, and hands-on projects such as park improvements, gardening, and site activation. By aligning programming with local capacity and available infrastructure, Melgund Recreation, Arts and Culture provides practical support to the Local Services Board, helping meet recreation service expectations while strengthening community participation. The result is a consistent, locally driven approach to recreation in a rural Northwestern Ontario setting, where residents are directly involved in shaping, maintaining, and using the spaces and programs that serve them.

The Local Services Board of Melgund is established under Ontario’s Northern Services Boards Act, R.S.O. 1990, c. L.28. It is a local governance body that represents the interests of residents in Melgund Township and the communities of Dyment and Borups Corners.
