New Art Exhibition in Melgund Township Showcases Bold Paintings and Unique Bone Art
Art in Melgund Township reflects the realities of Northwestern Ontario—its forests, wildlife, and the people who live and work within it. Across painting, photography, textiles, sculpture, and traditional craft, local artists translate everyday northern experience into visual work that documents place, season, and memory.
This month, visitors have a direct opportunity to engage with that work. Borups Corners artist Leanne Nicholson is presenting a mixed-media exhibition at the upper level of the Dyment Recreation Hall, featuring a focused collection rooted in the landscapes and materials of the region.
The exhibition brings together bold acrylic paintings and detailed bone art, combining two distinct approaches into a single body of work. Nicholson’s compositions use strong linework and high-contrast colour to reflect northern terrain, while her use of natural materials introduces texture and form drawn directly from the surrounding environment. The result is a grounded, material-based practice that connects visual art with land-based knowledge and resourcefulness.
