Site Characterization Presentation

Site Characterization - NWMO

Thanks to Chantelle and Braden for delivering a very informative presentation on the NWMO's upcoming Site Characterization work.

On March 16, the Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) hosted an informative session at the Dyment Recreation Hall to discuss the next steps for the Deep Geological Repository (DGR). This presentation focused on the Site Characterization studies slated for the area, which involve detailed scientific investigations—such as borehole drilling and 3D seismic surveys—to ensure the rock at the selected site can safely isolate used nuclear fuel for hundreds of thousands of years.

The project is currently in the Planning Phase of a rigorous federal integrated impact assessment, conducted in collaboration with the Impact Assessment Agency of Canada (IAAC) and the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC). This process is designed to evaluate not only the technical safety of the repository but also its potential effects on the environment, local health, and community well-being over its projected 160-year lifespan.

Stay Informed and Involved

Community input is a vital part of the regulatory process. To learn more about the ongoing impact assessment, view technical documents, or see contributions from the public and Indigenous Nations, please visit the official IAAC registry:

LSB Meetings and Updates
The Melgund Integrated Nuclear Impact Assessment (MINIA) Project is dedicated to studying environmental, social, and cultural impacts at a local level. Public participation and comments to IAAC ensure that local voices are reflected alongside Indigenous, federal, and provincial input, contributing to responsible, long-term decision-making for the DGR.
