There’s a new pile of dirt at the Dyment Recreation Hall and Park — and it’s about to become something much more interesting.
Thanks to support from the Ontario Trillium Foundation Capital grant program, our community food and garden program is expanding this summer and fall. Plans include new raised garden beds, flower planters and water upgrades for the community commercial kitchen building, The Cook Shack.
But every garden starts with the same thing: dirt.
This week, a load of black soil was delivered to the hall, marking the first step toward creating new growing spaces for the community.
The gardens will provide opportunities to grow food, share gardening knowledge and get more people involved in hands-on, community-based food programming. New planters will add colour to the park, while the Cook Shack upgrades will support future cooking and food activities.
For now, though, it all starts with a big, heaping load of dirt.
